Byzantine Architecture: Domes and Light
Heavy stone learned to float.
Light was the secret ingredient.
Enter a world where domes hover on light and gold dissolves walls — and learn how builders turned engineering into pure spiritual atmosphere.
Domes and light will rewire how you shape interiors.
- Grasp the floating dome — understand the clever geometry that lifts a circle over a square
- Read sacred light — see how windows and gold were tuned to overwhelm the senses
- Follow the mosaics — understand walls that were designed to shimmer and speak
- Know the great church — appreciate why a single building stunned emperors and conquerors alike
- Track the legacy — trace these ideas into mosques and cathedrals across continents
- Feel atmosphere deliberately — learn how emotion in a room can be engineered on purpose
Built by one of the most-read architecture platforms in the world.
RTF | Rethinking The Future has spent over a decade publishing the ideas, projects and voices shaping architecture — and now brings that depth to learning. Every course is researched, written and produced by the RTF team.

Byzantine architecture blurred into a vague gold haze in my memory. Learning how pendentives carry domes and how light was engineered as theology brought Hagia Sophia into sharp focus. I finally understand why that building changed everything that came after it.

Answered simply.
Byzantine feels obscure — why should I care about it?
Because Hagia Sophia solved a problem — a dome floating over a square space — that architects still borrow from. It's the missing link between Rome and everything eastward.
Is this course visual or theoretical?
Deeply visual. You'll learn to read pendentives, mosaics and light as one integrated design intention.
Do I need any prior experience?
No. Every course starts from where you are and builds up step by step, in plain language.
Is this software training?
No — software changes yearly. The thinking you learn here lasts a career.
How does it work?
Short video lessons with a small practice task after each. Any device, your pace.
What does membership include?
One membership unlocks every course on RTF Academy — all 450+, nothing sold separately. And you stay in control: cancel anytime in one click, and you will never be charged again.
